Sea Shadow (IX-529) was an experimental stealth ship built by Lockheed for the United States Navy to determine how to achieve a low radar profile and to test high stability hull configurations used on oceanographic vessels.
U.s. Stealth Ship
Built in 1984 to study the implementation of stealth technology on naval vessels, Sea Shadow operated in secret until its public debut in 1993. In addition, the ship is designed to test the use of automation to reduce crew size. The ship was created by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the US Navy and Lockheed. The Sea Shadow was developed and built at Lockheed's Redwood City facility at Hughes Mining Park (HMB-1) in California and served as a floating dry dock during construction and testing.

The Sea Shadow featured a SWATH (small-waterplane-area twin hull) design. Submerged were twin hulls, each with a propeller, stern stabilizer and inner wing. The overwater part of the ship was connected to the hulls by means of two angled struts. The SWATH design helped keep the ship stable in rough waters up to Sea State 6 (wave height 18 feet (5.5 m) or "very rough" seas). The shape of the superstructure has been compared to the opening wing of the American Civil War CSS Virginia.
The Sea Shadow had 12 bunk beds, a small microwave, a refrigerator and a table. It was not intended to be mission-capable and was never commissioned, although it is listed in the Navy's Naval Register.
Unveiled to the public in 1993, Sea Shadow was housed at Naval Station San Diego until September 2006 when it was transferred along with the mining ship Hughes to the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet in Bicia, California. Until 2006, the Sea Shadow and HMB-1 were maintained and operated for the United States Navy by Lockheed Martin. The ships were available for donation to the National Maritime Museum.
