With a 4" barrel and 1.2" width, the Service Model XD is perfectly sized for any type of uniformed law enforcement use. For example, I know of a private security agency that manufactures the Service Model XD 9mm in Florida. In my case, I've shot several XD Service pistols over the past few years. I have a pretty good idea of what to expect when I go to the border. As a result, I had high expectations. XD sent. With 760 rounds through the gun, I had no problems at all. All types of ammo work well in this gun.
Accuracy is excellent out to 25 yards. Most weapons can be better than the man pulling the trigger and that seemed to be the case with the test rifle. When I do my job, the gun puts the rounds where they need to be.
Premium self-defense loads like the Federal HST 147-gr. JHP, Hornady Critical Duty 135-gr. FlexLock and Speer Gold Dot 124-gr. JHP +P all performed or exceeded expectations. All fed and fired with 100% reliability and converted into excellent groups.
One of the complaints some shooters have about modern striker-fired pistols is that the trigger is not easy. I agree that a striker-fired pistol has a different feel than a standard two-action, but I don't agree that it's bad. In fact, the XD has one of the best triggers in the class. The full size grip allows the shooter to better control the gun during the shooting process. As a side benefit, the larger grip allows for higher capacity magazines.
An additional concern for some people is the sense of safety that triggers. Like most striker-fired pistols, the XD uses a rotating part in front of the trigger to prevent accidental discharge. Springfield Armory uses a trigger safety that appears to have a rounded edge to increase comfort during range sessions. I found the safety comfort to be very good.
