Charleston Area Code - Area codes 304 and 681 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the state of West Virginia in the United States. The numbering plan area was established in October 1947 with area code 304, one of eighty-six area codes in North America. Plot number 681 was added to the same area with the tariff plan from March 28, 2009.
Due to West Virginia's small population, the state was one of the few remaining states with a single area code in the early 21st century. With the growth of telecommunications services, especially the proliferation of cell phones, cell phones, and fax machines, news reports in 2007 indicated that West Virginia would soon need a new area code.

The phone number (681-990-TEST (8378)) was used to test the correct access to the new West Virginia phone number service on December 28, 2008 and until June 28, 2009.
